Columbia River and Waterfalls

Wednesday 21st July

This was a most beautiful day, with unbelieveable scenery along every mile of our driving. The trees here are so wonderfully green - how many shades of green are there? Surely the are all here in Oregon!

Today was a drive along the Columbia River Scenic Highway - Historic Route 30. This is NOT to be missed. The morning was a little misty and foggy but it didn't detract from the amazing landscapes. Driving these roads has been easy ... except for the two or three times i have forgotten the 'right' side of the road to drive on. Luckily oncoming traffic was nil! And then the two or three times I have indicated with the windscreen wipers first! And I write the word "I" because Bini is not driving over here (additional driver cost) and also, as wonderful as having a sat-nav is, nothing beats a human navigator.

Vista House at Crown Point Overlook (a building that was nearly torn down but which was worth keeping just for the toilets) with beautiful views down the Columbia River.

and then the waterfalls: Latourell Falls, Bridal Veil and Multnomah Falls:

and lastly Bini's must see along this stretch ... Mount Hood!

This area is also Lewis and Clark territory explorers who opened up this part of the country - amazing explorers and adventurers who have left their mark ... so many places are named after them.

This is Oregon that we don't often hear about. Trees are everywhere (we hear about those) but there are also waterfalls and mountains and many many fantastic towns in this glorious landscape.
